Essential Tips When Adding a Laundry Area to Your Bathroom

If you’re planning to add a dedicated laundry area in your bathroom, you need to consider a few things. It also helps to work with a trusted bathroom remodeler who can properly convert your existing bathroom space. Check out these tips to help you get started.

Consider a Combo Unit

If you want to maximize limited bathroom space, consider a washer/dryer unit. Washer/dryer models are very common in other countries and steadily gaining popularity in the U.S. While the laundry cycle may take longer, a combo unit will only take up about half as much space as a separate washer and dryer. Most models won’t even need an exterior air vent and can be concealed under a counter or behind a cabinet.

Stack ‘Em Up

If you still want full-sized washer and dryer units, consider front-loading models that can be stacked to save space. You’ll need help from a bathroom contractor to install a vent from the dryer to the exterior wall. Depending on the design and space, the vent could be run within the ceiling joists.

Consider Unused Spaces

Whether you’re choosing separate or combined washer/dryer units for your laundry, you still need to figure out the best place to put them in your bathroom space. A closet could be your first choice — just remove the standard rod and shelves and you have a nice spot for your combo unit. You can also stack them and still have some storage space left for your laundry basket and other clothes.

If your bathroom has a large vanity, you could put them under the counter. You’ll need to give up a little cabinet space and possibly the extra sink to make room for your new laundry. You can still consider getting a separate washer and dryer and place them side by side under the counter, but if you want them stacked, you may need to shorten your vanity space a bit. Installing a combo unit might be a better choice if you want to save space and keep your vanity.
