Dining Table or Kitchen Island? Which Should You Choose?

Both a dining table and kitchen island are useful for kitchens large enough to accommodate either one. With that in mind, which is the better option? We’ll weigh the pros and cons to help you make a decision when renovating your kitchen space.

Dining Table Vs. Kitchen Island

In our experience, homeowners tend to lean towards a kitchen island. While more expensive, they find it to be a more functional investment. After all, with an island comes additional amenities, such as an extra sink, storage space, and trash disposal.

The Pros of a Table

We would like to point out, though, that a dining table can also be quite functional as a prep space. Although, the table needs to be within the work triangle, that is, within a few feet of the stove, sink, and fridge.

Another argument for a table is that the kitchen is increasingly becoming the main living hub. With that in mind, a table has that natural homely feel to it. Children can do their homework, or parents can do an arts and crafts project with their little ones. Of course, you can also do this on an island, though to some, an island may have an industrial feel.

The Pros of an Island

We recommend an island if storage is a priority. Extra cabinet space is always a big plus. Islands are also higher off the floor, making it more efficient for working while standing. Being higher off the floor also means seating often comes in the form of barstools, which some homeowners prefer.
