Balance

In interior design, balance is described as the equal distribution of visual “weight” in a room. There are three styles of balance that you should be aware of: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial. Symmetrical balance is characterized by the same number of objects repeated in the same positions throughout the space. Asymmetrical balance is achieved with dissimilar objects, while radial symmetry is focused around a central point. 

Rhythm

Rhythm in interior design is about the repetition of patterns and contrast to create visual interest within a space. You can establish rhythm by using the same colors, patterns or shapes at different intervals. For instance, you could add a throw pillow in a color that is picked up from a painting or print on the wall. You can then echo this color again with a rug. This strategic repetition helps tie a space together. 

Harmony

Harmony is created when all the elements are thoughtfully put together to create a unified message. For example, you can use a primary color for different objects that vary in shape, size, texture and function.

Emphasis

A space where all the elements seem equally important will feel bland and boring. To remedy this, pick out an “anchor” or point of interest that can stand out. Architectural elements such as windows or a fireplace are great options, but if a room is lacking these features, you can create one by grouping furniture together or by using a large accent piece. 

Proportion & Scale

Proportion is comparative relation to a whole while scale is how the size of one object relates to another or to the space in which it is placed. Keep this in mind when picking out furniture. A large, bulky sofa will look sorely out of proportion and scale when placed inside a tiny room.
