5 Effective Color Blocking Tips for Your Kitchen Remodel

Color blocking has seen yet another upswing not just in fashion, but also in the realm of home remodeling and interior design. This trend is all about the interplay of color—often bold, sometimes contrasting—to create a striking statement. This sets color blocking apart from “standard” interior design color palettes, which usually emphasize subtle color variations and complementary colors.

If you’ve got an upcoming kitchen renovation project and want a space that truly pops, color blocking is a technique worth exploring. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

1. Keep It Simple (at First)

Whether you are looking to make a statement without going overboard or want to try out this interior trend for the first time, it would make sense to start small on color blocking your kitchen space. Brightly colored kitchenware and furniture are easier and more affordable to replace than major kitchen features like countertops and cabinets.

2. Choose a Dark Base Color

Merging bright, high-energy shades with a dark base color helps create a striking and interesting look for your kitchen. The contrast brings out the color blocking effect within the space, resulting in a dynamic scheme that switches from moody and dramatic to cheerful and appealing.

3. Use Various Shades Within the Same Color Family

Utilizing tones in the same color is also a great way to incorporate color blocking into your kitchen design. This solution works if you want a subtler color scheme or are worried about picking the wrong combination of hues. Textures like matte, glossy, metallic or tiled surfaces provide extra visual interest for your kitchen features.

4. Pair Different Wood Types

If you are not too keen on picking different hues, consider a natural palette for your kitchen consisting of different colored woods. For your cabinets and countertops to look cohesive, make sure the panels are oriented in such a way that the grains run in the same direction. Got a small kitchen? Consider panels with a horizontal wood grain to establish a sense of space.

5. Optional: Pick Colored Appliances

Consider splurging on colored appliances, especially if it is time to upgrade them. Remember that they will grace your kitchen for a long time, so choose a color that you love and won’t be thoroughly annoyed by after a while. If your kitchen remodel involves changing up the whole cooking zone, decide whether you want to complement your new appliances with an all-white, neutral or contrasting scheme.
