Tub replacement is one of those things brought up by a growing number of clients during our design consultations. We understand the appeal! Walk-in showers make your space feel larger, are more accessible to older users and people with limited mobility, and are more durable and easier to maintain than most bathtubs. It’s easy to see why it’s the best choice for a lot of homeowners.
But as with most things in our business, the real question is, is it the best choice for you?
Should You Ditch the Tub?
Before you decide to say goodbye to your bathtub, take the time to answer the questions below. If you answer “yes” to one or more of them, you may want to reconsider the switch.
Is the tub in question the only one in your house? A shower-tub combination may be a better idea if you have only one full bathroom. It’s nice to have options!
Are there kids living with you or staying over frequently? Small children tend to prefer baths over showers. Most parents agree that bathtime is easier and more pleasant (and post-bath cleanup faster!) when kids can sit and play in a tub.
Are you planning to sell your home in a few years? If you intend to put your home on the market someday, know that the lack of a bathtub can be a minus for families who have, or are planning to have, kids.
Is the tub under a window? Most contractors caution against having a window in the shower. Even if line of sight weren’t an issue, the combination can create opportunities for water damage and mold growth. Steps should be taken to waterproof the window and surrounding wall, which will add to the total cost of the project.
Tub-to-shower conversion therefore makes the most sense if you’re living in your “forever home”, are looking to age in place comfortably and, ideally, have an extra full bath for guests.
