Looking Back at the Top Bathroom Remodeling Trends of 2019

According to the recent 2019 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, several bathroom remodeling trends could take over in the coming years. The bathroom remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Central Texas take a look.

Shower Upgrades

According to Houzz’s study, four in five homeowners upgraded their showers during a master bathroom renovation, with over half of upgrades involving an increase in shower size. Fifty-four percent of renovating homeowners chose to increase the size of the shower area while keeping the same bathroom square footage. In contrast, only a small percentage of renovating homeowners chose to increase their bathroom’s floor area.

Relaxation

Forty-five percent of renovating homeowners in the study report that they relax in their bathrooms. This means elements that contribute to a relaxing, spa-like environment, such as a clean design, soothing color palette and a comfortable bathtub, are key bath renovation features. Bathtubs with hot tub features such as water jets are also becoming more popular.

Transitional & Modern Styles

The number of renovating homeowners who chose to change to transitional and modern styles has increased slightly since 2018. In comparison, homeowners who chose stylistic extremes—contemporary and traditional—have decreased by more or less the same percentage points. This indicates a willingness to mix up styles and not stick to strict stylistic rules. Transitional styles, for instance, feature a mix of both contemporary and traditional elements.

Accent Walls & Mirrors

An accent wall is a wall that features colors, materials or patterns that are distinctly different from the rest of the room. While typically associated with living rooms and master bedrooms, up to a third of renovating homeowners have added an accent wall to their bathrooms, particularly in the shower area. New mirrors are also trending, with three in four renovating homeowners installing new mirrors during upgrades. Medicine cabinets also typically receive an upgrade in terms of mirror size.
