5 Bathroom Essentials for Holiday Houseguests

You don’t need five-star accommodations to make your holiday guests feel at home. You’ll be surprised how far a clean, well-thought-out space and a few small luxuries can go. This is doubly true for one of the most important areas in your home: the bathroom.

Focus on Thoughtful Touches

Let’s preface this list with what should be obvious to any good host: your bathroom must be clean and fully functional. If you need to change a light fixture or call a pro for a shower replacement, do so before your guests arrive.

Once you’ve got that covered, the rest is easy:

  1. Linens. Treat your guests to your nicest bath and hand towels, washcloths, rugs and shower curtains.

  2. Toiletries and medicines. Your guests will thank you for stocking things they may have forgotten to pack. These include shampoo, hand soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, cotton balls—anything you’d expect a traveler would need. An accessible first aid kit complete with headache and allergy medication is also a thoughtful touch.

  3. Toilet supplies. Keep extra toilet paper, a toilet brush and a plunger handy in your main or guest bathroom to spare your guests a possible embarrassing episode.

  4. Laundry hamper and trash can. Make it easy for your guests to keep their home away from home tidy by providing these two often-overlooked essentials.

  5. Special extras. Add flowers or potted plants on tables. Scent the room with reed diffusers, scented candles or potpourri. Create an in-home spa by providing bath oils, bath sponges and loofahs. These nice-to-haves can elevate a guest’s experience from so-so to luxurious.
