What to Expect When Living at Home While Remodeling

When you’re in the middle of a home remodeling project, it’s entirely possible to continue living on-site. However, there will be some challenges that come with living there as the project is done. Here are some things you should know about.

Keeping the Site Clean

Every day that your remodelers are working, dust and debris will accumulate, and sometimes the mess is not limited to where they’re working. While most professionals clean up after themselves, you may have to contribute to the cleaning to protect your family from allergic reactions to the dust and dirt. You may also have to take out the trash more often at this time, as garbage bags tend to fill up more quickly.

Protecting Your Belongings

You can’t leave everything as-is while work is underway. Professionals will shield other areas of the house with protective film, tarp or plastic. However, even before the project begins, it’s best to move some things to a safer location, such as furniture and appliances. Keep them in another room to protect them from dust and potential damage.

Planning Your Routine

It’s prudent to plan your routine around the project for now. Cooking, washing dishes, doing laundry and other everyday chores might not be easy to do, so plan some temporary solutions to make these tasks easier. If you work at home or if you have family members who need to study, consider setting up in an area farthest from where the work is being done so you can avoid the noise.
