Tips on Remodeling Your Starter Home

Many people who buy starter homes end up moving on to a bigger house in two years’ time. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. In today’s post, local home renovation company DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Central Texas shares tips on how to make your starter home your forever home.

Address Structural Issues First

Your home needs good “bones” before anything else, which means structural components need to be addressed first. The house needs a sound foundation with no signs of settling. The roof should not be leaking and the attic should be well-insulated. The exterior walls likewise need to be insulated and properly cladded. Keep an eye on these issues before buying a home, unless clearly stated in the listing that the home requires repairs.

Don’t Start Renovations Too Soon

Give yourself some time to get a sense of your home’s layout before you start making changes to it. Learn how the rooms flow into each other and how natural light hits the windows. Living in your new home first will give you a better understanding of what needs to be improved. It will also give you time to thoroughly plan major changes.

Consider an Open Floor Plan

A starter home can often benefit from converting all the common rooms into an open floor plan. This can make the house look more spacious, allow natural light into more areas and give you more flexibility when you need to adjust space between living areas. When planning your home remodel, have a remodeling contractor inspect the structure to determine if it’s suitable for conversion to an open floor plan. Older homes use load-bearing walls instead of support beams, which will require structural changes to the house.

Get New Countertops

Your starter home may have come with countertops that are made of a less durable material like laminate plywood. Upgrading to a countertop made of granite or marble can dramatically improve your kitchen, both aesthetically and functionally. Pairing it with a beautiful backsplash and a good set of fixtures will make it a kitchen that you will enjoy for a long time.

Look for Energy-Efficient Upgrades

Look for energy-efficient options for your home remodel. Energy-efficient kitchen appliances and LED lighting consume less electricity, while energy-efficient replacement windows help you save energy by reducing thermal transfer. Look for the ENERGY STAR® label when making your selections.
