Finding the Best Place for a Home Office

Working from home includes a number of benefits as well as drawbacks. On the one hand, you have unrestricted access to your refrigerator for last night’s leftovers and the option of wearing slippers during conference calls. What’s the disadvantage? Your entire family is suddenly sharing a workspace with you.

If you’re lucky, you have a spare room in your house that you can use as a home office. If not, you’ll have to get creative to make it work. Today, we discuss how to choose the best location in your home for an office.

Where to Set Up Your Home Office

1. Spare room. Using a spare room in the house is by far the cheapest option, but it has certain drawbacks. If you’re not alone, expect a lack of privacy and noise. If your budget only allows for a used desk in the corner of your living room as your new headquarters, go for it! Many successful entrepreneurs started with the same.

2. Dining room. The dining room, which is often used only on occasion, is the most common room to convert into a home office. Unfortunately, most dining rooms lack doors, making them unsuitable for customer calls.

3. Kitchen. An extendable desk with a filing cabinet below and hutch above can serve as a good location. If you live alone or your family members are at work or school, doing business from your kitchen can be okay.

4. Extra bedroom. For home-based enterprises that don’t see clients, a spare bedroom is the second most popular alternative. You can set up a full office or utilize as little or as much space as you need. Since this is a distinct office, you can decorate as you choose and address any functional issues, such as adding an extra phone jack or insulating windows to keep out the winter chill.

5. Converted garage. The garage can be a terrific area for a business, especially if it’s adjacent to the house, has its own door and is large enough. The disadvantage is the high cost of converting a garage into a fully functional home workstation with power, heat and communications. The second disadvantage of using your garage is that you may have to park outside, which is unpleasant in winter.

6. Basement. Basements might be a suitable home office location if they are climate-controlled, have appropriate lighting and headroom, and are easily accessible. Moisture is a risk with basement workstations, however. Be sure to evaluate the conditions, especially if you plan to store sensitive items like merchandise or electronic equipment.

7. Attic space. Attics can also work if they are climate-controlled and have sufficient access. The disadvantage is the lack of an outside entry for clients. Many attics lack electrical outlets, phone jacks and even stable flooring to support technical equipment.
