Quartz vs. Granite Countertops: How to Choose

Man-made quartz and natural granite are very popular materials for kitchen and bathroom countertops. They can even be used for flooring and wall paneling if you’re looking for a more ornate design.

Quartz vs. Granite Countertops: How to Choose

However, choosing between quartz and granite can be tricky because they’re often used for similar bathroom and home kitchen designs. So which one should you pick for your project? Keep reading to learn more about the pros and cons of quartz and granite for your home.

Durability

Quartz and granite are both very hard countertop materials that can stand up to a lot of abuse. That’s what makes them excellent long-term choices for a bathroom or custom kitchen remodel.

•    Stain resistance. Granite is slightly porous and may be stained by liquids left standing for long periods of time. Due to this porosity, granite should be resealed once a year.

•    Heat resistance. Because quartz is an engineered product that includes resin, it is less heat-tolerant than granite. Quartz can be damaged if very hot items like hot pans or kettles are set directly on the surface.

•    Hardness. Granite and quartz are both extremely hard. Quartz can stand up to more pressure and force, but damaging granite should not be a day-to-day concern for most homeowners.

•    Maintenance. Quartz is easier to maintain than granite because it is non-porous and already sealed. Granite requires more care in the form of periodic sealing and polishing.

Style

Quartz is available in a rainbow of colors and textures to coordinate with any room. What sets granite apart is the beautiful natural variations that you get from slab to slab. Being a natural material, no two pieces of granite are exactly alike.

Cost

The cost difference between quartz and granite may be negligible depending on your budget and how much you need to complete your remodeling job. It’s worth pricing out both if you’re still unsure of which one is the right option for you.
