Kitchen Design Ideas for People Who Hate Cleaning

Keeping a kitchen clean is integral to the health of your family. Fortunately, it can be easy. If you already have your sights on a custom kitchen remodel, making sure your new kitchen is easy to clean is just a matter of incorporating a few design tweaks.

Keep It Smooth

Porous surfaces and nooks and crannies that gather dust are the bane of easy-clean kitchens. Your best bet then is to stick with countertops that can be made without seams and never require sealing like stainless steel, laminates, quartz and Corian. Granite is also easy to clean, but will call for occasional sealing.

For cabinets, raised panels and elaborate molding on doors look good but are difficult to clean, so opt for flat doors. You can have cabinets painted, but high-gloss finishes are easiest to wipe down.

No Lines

Grout lines on floors are a challenge to keep clean, so keeping them to a minimum in a kitchen is key. This calls for large-format tiles. The bigger they are, the fewer you’ll need to cover your floor, resulting in fewer seams. You can even tell your local kitchen remodeling company to make grout lines narrower and use epoxy grout, which resists stains.

Make That Kitchen Work Triangle Work

Have your kitchen arranged in such a way that the distance between each point in the kitchen work triangle (your cooktop, sink and refrigerator) is as short as possible. This limits the distance you have to cover carrying things for food prep, which is when a lot of spills occur. If you have a larger kitchen, adding an island can help narrow the gap between each point.
