Expanding Kitchen Storage Without Reducing Floor Space

It’s hard to cook in a cramped kitchen. Fortunately, you don’t need to expand your floor space just to increase storage space. Read on for tips on how you can do this.

Add Built-In Cabinets

Freestanding cabinet pieces can expand storage space but they take up floor space, which is why most home improvement contractors recommend installing built-in cabinetry. There are ways to maximize the amount of storage built-in cabinets can provide, such as:

  • Expanding cupboards to the ceiling. You’ll likely stack cookware on top of cabinets that stop halfway to the ceiling, so you might as well use the remaining space for additional cupboards. You can also use this chance to streamline your kitchen and do some kitchen cabinet refinishing work.
  • Use deep drawers. It’s easier to access cookware stored in a deep drawer. Just make sure to install deep drawers with a sturdy sliding mechanism, so you can store heavy pots and pans in the bottom drawers as well.
  • Add a butler’s pantry. A butler pantry is sometimes called a kitchen within a kitchen—it’s a small service and storage space usually situated between the kitchen and the dining room. It may seem like a luxury, but it can do wonders for kitchen space.

Install Two-Bin Trash Units

No one wants a trash can as part of their kitchen decor. Installing a two-bin unit next to your sink can help you conceal trash and simplify recycling.

Get a Kitchen Island

Of course, you can only expand so much by using a few cabinet tricks. If you want to enhance kitchen functionality and cabinet space at the same time, a kitchen island with drawers and cupboards is a better option.
