The Do’s & Don’ts of a Kitchen Layout

When planning a kitchen remodel, one of the things you need to think about is its layout. Focusing on it first will help you decide which color palette, fixtures and surface materials go well with your space. DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Aiken shares these do’s and don’ts of planning your kitchen layout.

Kitchen Layout Do’s

Determine the function of your kitchen island.

Form follows function, especially if you want to incorporate an island into your kitchen space. Think about how you’d like to use it before you settle on its design. If it is going to be a dual-purpose area for preparing and eating meals with your family, make sure that you have enough space to ensure separation between the diner-style seating and the stovetop. Other elements, like a dishwasher and sink, can boost the island’s functionality further.

Make the walkways wide enough.

Your kitchen walkways should be wide enough that you can move without colliding with an island corner or an open fridge door. We recommend that walkways across the space be at least 36 inches wide. Make sure the dimensions of the island or peninsula are adjusted to accommodate this particular measurement.

Kitchen Layout Don’ts

Don’t disregard kitchen traffic.

You shouldn’t overlook traffic flow when planning your kitchen renovation. The last thing you want is for two people to bump into each other as they enter and exit the kitchen. By planning traffic accordingly, you also avoid instances where opening the refrigerator, oven door or dishwasher becomes difficult. You can do this by locating the range or cooktop somewhere where it doesn’t get in the way. Think of the kitchen island as a partition that separates the working area from the part where everyone can socialize.

Don’t forget to maximize vertical spaces.

If you have a small kitchen, it helps to maximize every bit of space, including the walls. One storage opportunity would be a closed-off cupboard attached to the corner of the ceiling and wall. Mix it with some open shelving to add variety to your storage space. Observe minimum clearance requirements for wall cabinets as well. Depending on the type of cooktop you have in your kitchen, make sure they are positioned over it at a distance of up to three feet.
